Who are we?
The cafe is a project of Journey Community Trust, which has been set up by Journey Metroplitan Community Church to serve
the community in our local area. We are of course keen to welcome people of all faiths and none as visitors or volunteers
VEGed Out was established in the summer of 2011, we are a group of like-minded people with common values. The cafe is the trading outlet of Journey Community Trust, a Social Enterprise founded to benefit the people who live and work in Birmingham and the surrounding areas.
We hope in the future to trade at a surplus. This surplus will then be used for community initiatives. Like any other business we need to make a profit in order to pay our bills. However, we have chosen not to distribute or take a profit from the business personally and are a ‘not for profit’ business. Instead we reinvest any profit that we do make in our business and our services, which in turn, helps us to achieve our commitments to improving the local community.
Since we opened we have recruited over 30 volunteers, who all give their time free of charge. We are an inclusive community of people and actively support volunteers from all backgrounds and levels of ability.
Why Vegetarian & Vegan?
There are a number of good reasons to specialise in Vegan & Vegetarian food, in short, it's healthy, the market segment is poorly served, we can use affordable local produce, it's better for the environment and it is extremely tasty, at least our food is anyway! But ultimately we are a community cafe, to us that means providing a service which appeals and appeases as many segments of society as possible. Vegetarian, & particularly Vegan food contain no animal products, for that reason they can be eaten by anyone. As inclusiveness is a large part of our ethos, we want to ensure that Veged Out cafe appeals to the behaviours and beliefs characteristic of various religious, ethnic, cultural and social groups, many of which live by dietary constraints that prohibit the consumption of certain animal products. Given Birmingham's diverse population, we consider it appropriate that Veged Out provides cuisine which can be enjoyed by everyone.
Our Ethos
1. Provide an inclusive community space open to all.
2. Produce affordable, healthy vegetarian and vegan food.
3. Maintain ecological working practices and promote green practices.
4. Use fair-trade produce and promote the fair-trade ethos.
5. Shop locally and use seasonal produce.
6. Recruit, retain & promote volunteering in the community.
7. Provide training & volunteering opportunities for excluded individuals
8. Encourage wider use of the building by varied community groups by providing affordable room hire.
9. Provide community activities that encourage community cohesion and promote inclusiveness.
10. To maintain the ethos of its founder Journey MCC. The values can be found at journeymcc/what we believe
